Signs You Need to Address Your Mental Health

Similar to how we care for our physical health, it is essential to nurture our mental health, and being aware of the right moment to ask for help is vital. Understanding the indicators that someone, whether it is you or someone close to you, may require mental health support is important.
Common signs that indicate it’s time to seek mental health care include:
  • Persistent anxiety or overwhelming sadness
  • Significant changes in sleep or appetite
  • Social withdrawal
  • Loss of interest in daily activities
Overall, difficulty coping with everyday life is a significant indicator of a need for mental health treatment.

If you are in crisis, it’s essential to seek crisis care immediately. At Ocean View Psychiatric Health Facility, we provide care for individuals going through mental health crises through acute stabilization.

Signs you or a loved one may be experiencing a mental health crisis include:
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Psychosis
  • Paranoia

Understanding the Underlying Signs of Mental Illness

During a mental health crisis, individuals often display underlying signs of mental illness that signal a need for immediate support and care. These signs can include intense emotional distress, such as overwhelming sadness, anxiety, anger, or hopelessness that feels difficult to control.
People may also experience drastic changes in behavior. Cognitive symptoms can appear as distorted thinking patterns, including paranoia, hallucinations, and delusions. In some cases, individuals may express feelings of worthlessness, engage in risky behaviors, or have thoughts of self-harm or suicide.
Recognizing these warning signs early is essential, as timely intervention from mental health professionals, loved ones, or crisis services can help stabilize the situation and connect the individual with the support and treatment they need to begin healing.

Our Levels of Care to Help Provide Relief for Your Mental Health Symptoms

Ocean View Psychiatric Health Facility offers acute mental health care tailored to your unique needs. With Ocean View, you’ll experience stabilization-focused care that provides structure and support without stigma.

Inpatient Psychiatric Care

Individuals presenting with acute psychiatric symptoms can be admitted to Ocean View’s inpatient unit. You will receive comprehensive treatment that includes licensed psychiatric care, including:
  • 24/7 Nursing and Monitoring
  • 6 Daily Group Sessions
  • Psychoeducational Groups – These groups focus on understanding acute psychosis and its symptoms.
  • Therapeutic Recreation – Therapeutic recreation support includes skills that help you find inner peace (art, painting, music, and animals/pets).
  • Coping Skills Development – Coping skills are essential for managing symptoms and quieting negative thoughts and feelings.
  • Patients are placed in groups based on the severity of their symptoms
A core component of stabilization also includes the development of coping skills. Coping skills are essential for managing symptoms and reducing negative thoughts or feelings.

Medication Stabilization

Medication stabilization is an important component of crisis mental health stabilization, helping patients regain balance when symptoms of mental illness become severe or overwhelming.

During a crisis, a psychiatric provider at Ocean View will evaluate your symptoms, current medications, and medical history to determine whether starting a new medication, adjusting dosages, or changing medications could help reduce acute distress. The goal is to stabilize symptoms such as severe anxiety, depression, mood swings, psychosis, or agitation so you can think more clearly and safely engage in further treatment.

Medication stabilization is typically combined with close monitoring and supportive care to ensure the medication is effective, well-tolerated, and contributing to your overall safety and stabilization.

Outpatient Levels of Care

Ocean View’s outpatient levels of care follow an inpatient stay or when symptoms aren’t severe enough to warrant hospitalization. Once your symptoms are evaluated, you will be admitted to either our partial hospitalization program (PHP) or intensive outpatient program (IOP). Both levels of care provide safe, structured care that supports your symptom management.

Partial Hospitalization Program

PHP provides lower-level care than inpatient stabilization. However, Ocean View aims to offer the same secure, enjoyable, and compassionate care at every level. In PHP, patients can expect:
  • Four group sessions a day, meeting five days a week. These sessions include a psychoeducational group led by a social worker and a therapeutic recreation support session led by a recreation therapist.
  • Case management
  • Snacks and lunch

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

While our IOP is a less structured level of care, we provide the same safe, nonjudgmental, and compassionate care as our inpatient and PHP levels of care. The goal of IOP at Ocean View is to help patients develop coping skills that encourage stability outside of treatment. Once stable, we encourage community reintegration, which focuses on helping patients successfully transition back into everyday life while maintaining the progress they made during treatment.

Comprehensive Programs & Stabilization Services

At Ocean View, we offer comprehensive options tailored to meet varying needs, from intensive inpatient programs to supportive outpatient services. Our goal is to provide the appropriate level of care to promote recovery and stability. We do this by providing:
  • Psychiatric evaluation and medication stabilization
  • Structured care for acute episodes
  • Transition planning and discharge coordination
We collaborate with your outside providers, such as a primary care physician, to ensure continuity of care once you transition out of our program.

Ongoing Medication Management Support With Our PHP and IOP

Medication management is a key part of our inpatient crisis stabilization, where medications are carefully reviewed and prescribed based on each individual’s medical history, needs, and potential side effects. Continuous monitoring in our PHP and IOP programs allows our clinicians to make adjustments as needed to ensure optimal care and safety throughout treatment.
