Understanding Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition marked by fluctuations in mood, energy, and activity levels. These shifts range from manic or hypomanic highs to depressive lows, and the effects of bipolar disorder may interfere with your ability to function at work, in relationships, or at home.

Recognizing the Symptoms: Mania, Hypomania, and Depression

Mania

Severe manic episodes can lead to high-risk behaviors and emotional dysregulation. Symptoms may include:
  • Racing thoughts, impulsivity, and grandiosity
  • Increased energy, rapid speech, or delusions
  • Intense anxiety, irritability, or hallucinations
Individuals experiencing severe mania may benefit from inpatient bipolar treatment to stabilize symptoms in a secure, supportive environment.

Hypomania

Hypomania is a less intense form of mania that may still impact daily life. Common triggers include sleep deprivation, substance use, or significant life changes. Symptoms can include:
  • Elevated mood or energy
  • Distractibility and fidgeting
  • Irritability or increased goal-directed activity

Depression

Low mood, lack of motivation, and emotional fatigue are common during depressive episodes. You may experience:
  • Changes in appetite or sleep
  • Chronic fatigue or lack of interest
  • Low self-esteem
  • Feelings of worthlessness or suicidal ideation

Types of Bipolar Disorder

  • Bipolar I Disorder: At least one manic episode lasting a week or longer; often severe enough to require hospitalization.
  • Bipolar II Disorder: Periods of hypomania and depression without full mania.
  • Cyclothymia: Frequent but less severe mood swings that still affect functioning.

Medication Stabilization and Ongoing Support

Medication is a cornerstone of inpatient bipolar treatment. Our psychiatric team:
  • Assesses which mood stabilizers or antipsychotics are most appropriate
  • Monitors your response and adjusts dosages as needed
  • Coordinates care with outpatient prescribers post-discharge
The type of medication used to stabilize a mood disorder will vary depending on diagnosis. For example, someone experiencing symptoms of bipolar disorder is most likely to be prescribed a mood stabilizer, such as Lithium or Lamictal. On the other hand, someone with depression may start their medication journey with a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), such as Prozac or Zoloft. An essential component of our inpatient crisis stabilization is monitoring and adjusting your medication if necessary.

FAQs

When does a person with bipolar disorder need hospitalization?

Hospitalization for bipolar disorder is necessary when the symptoms become unmanageable. For example, if the individual is a threat to themselves (self-harm or thoughts of suicide) or others, it is time to seek acute psychiatric care at a mental health or bipolar disorder treatment center. Acute hospitalization provides 24/7 monitoring, rapid medication adjustment, and a structured environment to stabilize mood and manage safety risks. Families and caregivers should seek immediate help (emergency services or a hospital) if there is imminent danger or the inability to care for basic needs.
