Understanding Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder ( ADHD) is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders diagnosed in children. A neurodevelopmental disorder affects how the brain develops and grows. As a child’s brain develops, ADHD affects the part of the brain responsible for impulse control, decision-making, organization skills, and focus. However, not everyone is diagnosed with ADHD when they’re a child. There are cases where ADHD symptoms aren’t diagnosed until a person reaches adulthood. The symptoms of ADHD aren’t always apparent in adults, but they will encounter issues related to their ADHD. Furthermore, ADHD may go undiagnosed because its symptoms are similar to obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The similarities in symptoms can lead to ADHD being missed in patients with OCD and vice versa.
Common Signs and Symptoms of ADHD
The symptoms of ADHD can disrupt a person’s daily life and the lives of those around them. If a person or loved one wonders if someone has ADHD, they can share their concerns with a professional. However, if a person is unsure about the symptoms of ADHD, they can check the list below. Common symptoms of ADHD in children or adolescents include:
- Tapping of hands or feet, or fidgeting
- Difficulty waiting or being patient
- Struggling to focus on tasks like chores or work
- Having trouble interacting with others or maintaining relationships
- Staying organized
- Difficulty finishing tasks because of poor time management or a lack of interest
- Controlling their emotions or behaviors
- Feeling internally restless
Adults with ADHD can also be diagnosed with inattentive ADHD. Inattentive ADHD, known as attention deficit disorder (ADD), symptoms include forgetfulness, distractibility, and disengagement, and can be mistaken for a mental health condition like anxiety or mood disorders. ADD symptoms are less likely to be recognized, and the lack of recognition can lead to lifelong apathy, shame, academic, and work frustration.
How ADHD Can Impact Daily Life
The symptoms of ADHD are numerous and can be severe, and create continual issues that disrupt a person’s life. A person with ADHD can experience low self-esteem, disrupted relationships with friends and family, poor work performance, depression, or other mental health issues. They may also forget obligations, tasks, or deadlines for work. The effect of these symptoms can be harmful.
Untreated ADHD symptoms hurt mental health, social connections, and cause accidents and impulsivity. When left undiagnosed and untreated, ADHD symptoms worsen and increase the risk of mental health conditions.

- 4 group sessions each day led by social workers and recreation therapists.
- These will include psychoeducation and coping skills.

- Lunch and snacks are provided as well as fresh-air breaks.
- Weekly medication check-ins
- Case management
- Medication Compliance and Life Planning
Intensive Outpatient Program
Ocean View’s intensive outpatient program (IOP) is designed to provide engaging, structured care and increase independence. Patients are required to attend in-person therapy sessions 2-4 days a week from 10 am until 2:30 pm. They will:
- Focus on coping skills and community reintegration
- Receive continued medication management and support
The benefit of a PHP or IOP is that you can attend during the day and go home at night. An additional advantage of an IOP is that you can continue working or attending school.
