What Is a Thought Disorder?

A thought disorder is a condition that disrupts the way a person organizes, connects, or expresses thoughts, often making speech difficult to follow. It can involve symptoms of disorganized thinking, such as jumping between unrelated ideas, speaking incoherently, or disorganized speech, which may include creating unusual words, and may occur with conditions like schizophrenia, severe mood disorders, or substance use. A mental-health professional can evaluate the symptoms and recommend appropriate treatment.

Types of Thought Disorders

Several types of thought disorders exist. Each type has its own unique symptoms that disturb an individual’s thought process. In each type, thoughts, ideas, and expression are disrupted. The types of thought disorders are:
  • Alogia: This type of thought disorder includes a poverty of speech or giving short, unelaborated responses when asked questions. People with alogia often don’t speak unless prompted. It is often experienced by those diagnosed with schizophrenia or dementia.
  • Blocking: Thought blocking occurs when an individual suddenly interrupts themself mid-sentence. They may not speak for several seconds or minutes. Often, when they begin to talk again, they change the topic. This is common in individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia.
  • Circumstantiality: Circumstantial thinking or speech may include an abundance of irrelevant details expressed in their speaking or writing. While they maintain their original thought pattern, they add unnecessary details before returning to their main point.
  • Clanging or Clang Association: Individuals with clanging choose their words based on how the word sounds rather than the meaning of the word. Often sentences are developed by using alliteration, puns, or rhymes and don’t make sense. Clang association is often a symptom of mania, which occurs in bipolar disorder.
  • Derailment: Derailment is characterized by a conversation that comprises semi-related ideas. Thoughts and ideas often drift further and further from the topic being discussed.
  • Distractible Speech: An individual with distractible speech finds it challenging to stay on a topic. They change topics and are distracted by their surroundings and internal stimuli.
  • Echolalia: Those with echolalia find it difficult to communicate. They often repeat words and noises they hear in place of expressing their thoughts.

Seeking Help For You or a Loved One?

The early warning signs of mental illness aren’t the same for everyone. However, there are early warning symptoms among individuals who are experiencing a mental health crisis. Some individuals may have extreme mood swings, delusions, paranoia, or hallucinations. Others may experience changes in their appetite, sleep patterns, or self-care habits.

If you or a loved one experiences one or more of these symptoms, we recommend seeking help as soon as possible. Early intervention with evidence-based treatment can increase the chances of long-term clinical improvement. Our admission team members will guide you through the admission process to ensure your loved one receives the care they need.
