How Symptoms of Mental Health Disorders Disrupt Daily Life

When an individual’s mental health is undergoing severe or dangerous changes, it affects their cognitive, physical, and emotional health. Overwhelming feelings linked to specific mental health disorders like anxiety or bipolar disorder can disrupt their day-to-day routines. For example, traumatic events like violence, abuse, or childhood neglect can affect social interactions. They may find ways to avoid certain events or isolate themself from others. They can also experience these symptoms:
  • Depression
  • Frustration
  • Bursts of unexplainable anger
  • Fatigue
  • Extreme mood swings

Additionally, feelings of hopelessness and an inability to focus or concentrate can make you or a loved one feel it is impossible to get through the day.

Signs and Symptoms of Mental Health Disorders

Getting help for mental health issues can be challenging. Some with mood disorders like bipolar disorder or anxiety disorders may not believe they need help. However, there are symptoms that you or a loved one may need short-term mental health treatment. A few of the symptoms that signal the need for acute psychiatric mental health stabilization include:
  • Severe changes in thought patterns, behavior, or mood – specifically if those include thoughts or attempts of self-harm or suicide
  • Aggression
  • Difficulty with day-to-day routines
  • Substance use
  • Psychotic symptoms – delusions, hallucinations, or disorganized thinking
When these thoughts, behavior changes, or other symptoms occur, you or your loved one should contact a mental health or healthcare provider. Ocean View Psychiatric Health Facility can quickly and compassionately provide the supportive care needed.

When Symptoms Require Psychiatric Care

Deciding to seek treatment for a loved one or for your mental health crisis can be challenging. You may not know the warning signs of a mental health crisis. If you think you or a loved one needs crisis stabilization or short-term treatment for mental health conditions, call your medical provider, therapist, or Ocean View. Our helpful admissions team members are here to help you.

Medication Stabilization

Medication management is a key part of our inpatient crisis stabilization, where medications are carefully reviewed and prescribed based on each individual’s medical history, needs, and potential side effects. Continuous monitoring allows our healthcare team to make adjustments as needed to ensure optimal care and safety throughout treatment.

Our Outpatient Levels of Care

Ocean View Psychiatric Health Facility includes multiple levels of care, tailored to the needs of adults who require acute psychiatric care and symptom management.

Partial Hospitalization Program

You will transition to our PHP once you complete our inpatient program. A PHP is an intensive, structured treatment program lasting four to eight hours. You will have several hours of group therapy and personalized individual therapy during the day. You will also participate in holistic therapy and life skills sessions. The role of a PHP is to
  • Four group sessions a day, meeting five days a week. These sessions include a psychoeducational group led by a social worker and a therapeutic recreation support session led by a recreation therapist.
  • Case management
  • Snacks and lunch

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

While our IOP is a structured level of care, we focus on providing the same secure, enjoyable, and compassionate care found in our inpatient and PHP levels of care. However, we also include:
  • Focused Coping Skills
  • Community Reintegration

Ongoing Medication Management Support With Our PHP and IOP

When you come to us, we will review your comprehensive health history. This includes going over your current medications. Ocean View has doctors who are trained to meet your health care needs. They will work with the doctor and psychiatrist who prescribed medications for any health issue you may have. Once they discuss the best course of care with your therapist or your doctor at Ocean View, they will prescribe the medicine required for your mental health.

Our knowledgeable medical staff monitors your response to medication to ensure you receive the correct dose. If the medication isn’t working or the dosage isn’t at a level that works for you, we will adjust it.

Regular monitoring and adjustments are integral to ensuring medication efficacy and safety. As symptoms stabilize, both PHP and IOP incorporate medication management to optimize treatment efficacy and safety, supporting your continued progress.
